A City That Has Always Stood on Its Own

A Community Shaped by Many Arrivals
The 2020 Census and subsequent ACS estimates describe a genuinely diverse city. The largest groups are Hispanic residents at 44.4%, followed by Asian residents at 25.6% and Black residents at 17.2%. About 37.4% of Gardena's residents were born outside the United States, and ACS-derived estimates put the share of households speaking Spanish only at 33.1%. These are not abstract statistics — they reflect a city where multiple languages, cuisines, and cultural traditions share ordinary street life. The city also maintains active Sister City affiliations with Ichikawa, Japan and Huatabampo, Mexico — formal ties that reflect the real connections residents have maintained across borders for years.
Gardena's Japanese American community has been present for well over a century. The Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute traces its origins to 1912, when it was founded as Moneta Gakuen — a Japanese language school serving the families of early Japanese immigrants to the area. The school survived World War II and, after the war, opened its doors as a hostel for Japanese Americans returning from incarceration in concentration camps, helping to re-anchor a displaced community. It was formally re-established as the Gardena Valley Japanese Language School in 1967, then renamed the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute in 1968, and remains active today as a centre for language instruction and cultural programmes.
Two Milestones Worth Knowing
In 1966, Kiyoto Ken Nakaoka became the first Nisei — a person born in America to Japanese parents — to join the Gardena city council. He served as the city's mayor in 1972.
That same year, 1972, Nissin Foods USA opened its first U.S. plant in Gardena, where it began production of Top Ramen® — the first instant ramen manufactured and sold in the United States. The company's U.S. headquarters remains at 2001 W. Rosecrans Ave. in Gardena. From that single South Bay plant, a product that became a fixture in American kitchens made its national debut.
