Dental Care for Westchester, CA and the LAX Neighborhood
Westchester is the Los Angeles neighborhood that physically contains all of Los Angeles International Airport, bordering LAX on three sides. That means our patients here keep unusual hours, and we build our schedule around the early and late shifts that airport work demands.
A neighborhood built around the airport
Few communities are shaped by a single institution the way Westchester is shaped by LAX. A 2014 LAEDC economic study counted roughly 40,000 jobs on airport property and another 27,500 in businesses directly next to it. Many of those workers live within a short drive of our chairs, and their days start before dawn or run past midnight. LAX runs a 24-hour aircraft-noise line for the community, the LAX Noise Comment Line at (424) 646-NOISE, which tells you something plain about the neighborhood: it never fully sleeps.

The housing story north of the runways
Jet noise left a mark on the map. As LAX expanded, the city bought and condemned homes on noise-weary streets just north of the airport; some streets were decommissioned and the houses demolished. In all, Westchester lost 4,500 homes and 14,000 residents. For the homes that stayed, the LAX Residential Sound Insulation Program offered soundproofing to owners inside the 65 dB CNEL noise contour, beginning in 1997 in the highest-impacted parts of Westchester and Playa del Rey. LAWA set a final participation deadline of June 1, 2010, closed the program out in 2014, and by then had soundproofed over 7,300 residential units near LAX. If your house was part of that work, you already know how much the neighborhood is defined by what passes overhead.
Students, staff and a working commute
Westchester is also a campus town. Loyola Marymount University, a private institution founded in 1911, moved to its current bluff location in 1928 and now sits on a 142-acre campus at 1 LMU Drive, with undergraduate enrollment of 7,273 in fall 2024. Otis College of Art and Design moved into a former IBM building in 1997; its Goldsmith Campus at 9045 Lincoln Boulevard is anchored by Ahmanson Hall, the converted 1963 IBM Aerospace building known for its computer punch-card window design. Students, faculty and campus staff make up a good share of the people we see.
Getting to and from work is changing, too. The LAX/Metro Transit Center opened June 6, 2025, at Aviation Boulevard and 96th Street, connecting the K and C Lines, with free shuttle buses every 10 minutes covering the 2.5-mile route to the terminals. The LAX Automated People Mover, a 2.25-mile line with six stations, is estimated to begin passenger service in June 2026. For a shift worker, that can mean a more predictable trip and a little more room in the day for an appointment.

Westchester began in the late 1930s, when developers Fritz Burns and Fred W. Marlow built inexpensive prefabricated homes on a former hog farm near Manchester and Sepulveda, and the community grew as wartime aerospace boomed. Earlier still, the farmland hosted the cross country equestrian event at the 1932 Summer Olympics. Today the neighborhood counts 40,868 residents in the 2019–2023 American Community Survey five-year estimates, with a median household income around $132,577 for ZIP 90045 per unitedstateszipcodes.org — a busy, settled, working community.
