Dental Care for Hyde Park, CA Families
Hyde Park is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, laid out in 1887 along a Santa Fe Railway line and consolidated with the city in 1923. Lennox Family Dental is located in neighboring Inglewood and has been serving the South Bay since 1993.
One of Los Angeles's Oldest Neighborhoods
Hyde Park was laid out as a town in 1887, as a stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway's Harbor Subdivision, which ran from Downtown Los Angeles to the port at Wilmington. The railroad gave the community its first identity as a settled place. Hyde Park incorporated as its own city in 1922, with its own government. On May 17, 1923, after a favorable vote by residents, its 1.2 square miles were consolidated with the City of Los Angeles.
Today the neighborhood sits in the South region of Los Angeles. Its boundaries are West Vernon Avenue on the north, South Arlington and Van Ness Avenues on the east, and the Los Angeles city boundary on the south and west. According to the Mapping L.A. project of the Los Angeles Times, it touches Leimert Park to the north, Vermont Square to the northeast, Chesterfield Square to the east, Manchester Square to the southeast, Inglewood to the south and southwest, and View Park-Windsor Hills to the west and northwest.
The Crenshaw Corridor
The commercial corridor along Crenshaw Boulevard is known as the heart of African American commerce in Los Angeles. Destination Crenshaw, an open-air museum running along Crenshaw Boulevard between 48th and 60th streets, celebrates African American history and culture. Its organizers describe it as 1.3 miles of art and culture celebrating Black Los Angeles.
The K Line's Hyde Park Station
Hyde Park Station is an at-grade light rail stop on the Metro K Line, in the median of Crenshaw Boulevard between Slauson Avenue and 59th Street. During planning it carried the working name "Crenshaw/Slauson"; Metro adopted the current name in July 2015 in response to local feedback. The station opened on October 7, 2022, and features art by Carlson Hatton celebrating the area's musical heritage.
The Library and Parks
The Hyde Park Miriam Matthews Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library is at 2205 W. Florence Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90043. Nearby, the Van Ness Recreation Center on 2nd Avenue has two indoor gymnasiums, outdoor basketball courts and three baseball diamonds.
A Note on Preservation
Not all of Hyde Park's landmarks survived. The original wooden Hyde Park Congregational Church, with two front-corner towers, was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1963. Despite the designation, the church was demolished in 1964.
Schools in the Neighborhood
Hyde Park is served by Los Angeles Unified and a cluster of public charter campuses. Crenshaw Senior High School is on 11th Avenue, and View Park Preparatory Accelerated High and its charter middle school sit on South Crenshaw Boulevard. Elementary families attend schools such as Angeles Mesa Elementary on West 52nd Street, Fifty-Ninth Street Elementary on Second Avenue, and YES Academy on Hyde Park Boulevard. KIPP Academy of Opportunity, a charter middle school, is on South Van Ness Avenue.
Who Lives Here
The 2000 census counted 36,635 people across 2.88 square miles, a density close to the city average, with a median age of 31. For many households here, a dental office that offers Spanish-speaking staff and keeps Saturday hours makes routine care easier to schedule around school and work.
