It is the only community college in South Central Los Angeles, part of the Los Angeles Community College District, and holds a federal Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) designation that directs funding toward support for low- and middle-income Black Americans. The land for the campus was originally purchased in 1950 — 54 acres at $3,500 per acre from Union Oil Company — before the college opened seventeen years later.
West Athens Elementary School has been operating continuously since July 1, 1907, placing it among the oldest schools in this part of South LA. It serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade as part of LAUSD.
Just to the west, the Chester L. Washington Golf Course at Western Avenue and 120th Street is an LA County Historic Landmark (Project No. 2019-002653-(2)). LA County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn dedicated the course in Washington’s honor on March 18, 1982; it was one of the first public golf courses in Los Angeles to allow Black people to play. On August 16, 2015, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas renamed the section of 120th Street along the course’s north side Charlie Sifford Drive, honoring the golfer who in 1961 became the first Black athlete to receive full PGA Tour membership after the California Attorney General pressed the PGA to drop its exclusionary clause.
