Dental Care for Leimert Park, Los Angeles
Leimert Park is one of South Los Angeles’s most deliberately shaped communities — master-planned in 1928 by developer Walter H. Leimert, with its central plaza designed by the Olmsted Brothers. Lennox Family Dental, open since 1993 in nearby Inglewood, welcomes patients who live and work in the neighborhood.
A Master-Planned Neighborhood
Walter H. Leimert began his subdivision and business-center project in 1928. The centerpiece, Leimert Plaza Park, was designed by the Olmsted Brothers to serve as the public hub of the planned community. The Olmsted Brothers firm shaped some of the most recognized public grounds in the United States, which makes the design of this single South Los Angeles plaza an unusual distinction. The deliberate structure of the street grid and central square is still apparent nearly a century after the first lots sold.
The Los Angeles City Council formally recognized that legacy on May 22, 2019, when it adopted Council File 18-0385 — a motion introduced by Councilmember Herb Wesson Jr. — designating the commercial core as Historic Leimert Park Village. The resolution directed the transportation department to install permanent ceremonial signage at five intersections. SurveyLA had separately identified a Leimert Park Historic District with a period of significance from 1927 to 1950, finding the area eligible for designation both as a planned community and for its association with the African American and Japanese American communities.
The Vision Theatre
The Vision Theatre is the Village’s primary performing-arts venue. It opened on April 21, 1932 as the Leimert Theatre, operated by Fox West Coast Theaters. The building combines Art Deco with Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, placing it among the last two Art Deco theatres in the Los Angeles area. Actress Marla Gibbs purchased the property in 1990 and renamed it the Vision Theatre; financial difficulties in 1992 led to a bank foreclosure in 1997, and the City of Los Angeles took ownership in 1999. The 729-seat house then underwent a nearly $40 million restoration that preserved the building’s historic character while adding modern technical infrastructure. The restored theatre reopened in 2025.
Brockman Gallery
At 4334 Degnan Avenue, the Brockman Gallery occupies a specific place in American art history. It is described as the first major commercial gallery run by Black artists, for Black artists. In 1973, its founders established Brockman Productions, a non-profit organization created to support art in the Black community in Los Angeles, extending the gallery’s mission beyond commercial exhibition.
The K Line
The Metro K Line — also called the Crenshaw/LAX Line — opened to the public on October 7, 2022, with opening ceremonies held in Leimert Park Village. The Leimert Park station is underground. The full line is 8.5 miles long and cost approximately $2 billion to construct, adding light-rail service to Crenshaw Boulevard for the first time and connecting the neighborhood to LAX-area destinations. For patients who drive, Lennox Family Dental is at 10823 Hawthorne Blvd, Suite A, Inglewood — a short distance south along Hawthorne or Crenshaw Boulevard — with free parking on site.
Who Lives Here
Leimert Park has a population of roughly 12,400. African American residents make up approximately 65% of the neighborhood; Hispanic residents account for about 21%, and white residents about 6%. Approximately 42% of residents own their homes. The median construction year for the housing stock is 1949, meaning most of these homes have been through two or three generations of occupants — often within the same family or close community. That kind of long-term neighborhood tenure is something the practice recognizes from its own patient base: people who first came in during the 1990s are now bringing their children, and in some cases their grandchildren.
About the Practice
Dr. John Cohen, DDS opened Lennox Family Dental in 1993 with the goal of bringing full-service dentistry to a working-class community. The practice provides general and preventive care, cosmetic dentistry, dental implants placed and restored in-house, pediatric visits, orthodontics, and same-day emergency appointments. Spanish-speaking staff are on duty every day. For a complete list of what the office provides, see the services page.
Most major PPO dental plans are accepted, including Delta Dental, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, and others. The front-desk team files claims on patients’ behalf and provides a written cost estimate — broken down by what insurance covers and what the patient’s share will be — before any treatment begins. For patients whose plan is not listed, a call to (310) 412-8013 will confirm out-of-network benefits. Full details on accepted plans and financing options are on the insurance and financing page.
Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. New patients are welcome. Patient reviews are available on the site. Spanish-speaking visitors can also browse in Spanish.
